The Acrosstown Repertory Theatre’s mission is to engage, educate, challenge, and inspire the minds and hearts of our diverse community of patrons through the healing media of artistry, community outreach, and sponsorship of local talent wherever we may find it; and by practicing mindful, compassionate awareness of the importance of culture in our lives.
Since its inception in 1980, the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre has provided Gainesville and Alachua County with a unique and innovative theatrical mecca. It has provided entertainment and educational experiences for over 30 years for citizens of all ages, races, sexual preferences, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Both professional and amateur playwrights, designers, actors, and musicians have seen their craft realized. The ART provides opportunities for children, the elderly, the disabled, and minorities, and keeps its ticket prices low so that all members of the community can enjoy our programs.
The ART provides a number of multicultural, socially relevant, and alternative events. We produce seven mainstage productions per season; the shows range from topical drama to period piece to family comedy. We also host a number of donation-only multimedia and multicultural events. In recent months, we have featured improv troupes, literary clubs, and musical groups, and our house has enjoyed a cross-section of the Alachua County population.
The ART also provides low-cost entertainment for disadvantaged and disabled citizens. We provide free admission to members of veteran and homeless support organizations, and partner closely with local charitable and community-led organizations, including the Citizens Co-op, the Civic Media Center, St. Francis House, and the VA Domicile. Our productions benefit the Altrusa House, the Gainesville Community Alliance, Habitat for Humanity, and other beneficial projects.
